Most Levi's on a thrift rack are ordinary. The valuable ones give themselves away in small details: the tab, the edge of the seam, the care tag and the stitching. Learn these five checks and you can date a pair in under a minute without leaving the aisle.

Five checks, in order

  1. The red tab. If it reads LEVI'S in all capitals, that is the "Big E", used before 1971. Lowercase Levi's means 1971 or later. A tab with only the ® symbol cannot date the pair on its own.
  2. The outseam. Turn up a cuff. A clean woven edge with a red line through it is redline selvedge. The 501 kept it until about 1983.
  3. The care tag. No care tag at all points to before 1971. A plain white tag with red stitching and no logo is roughly 1971 to 1986. A red batwing logo means 1986 or later. A four digit month and year code, such as 1295, means 1993 or later.
  4. The country. Levi's closed its last US sewing plants around the end of 2003, so a Made in U.S.A. tag usually dates the pair to before 2004.
  5. The stitching. A single line of stitching on the inseam, and a chain stitched hem, both point to before the mid 1980s.

Two more clues for older pairs: back pocket rivets you can see from outside mean before 1937, and rivets hidden under the fabric mean roughly 1937 to the mid 1960s. A leather back patch means very early; later patches are card.

Which pairs are worth money

TypeWhat it usually means for value
Big E red tab (before 1971)Top tier. Commonly sells in the hundreds; exceptional early pairs go far higher.
Redline selvedge 501 (before about 1983)Top tier. Sells in the same range as Big E pairs.
Big E trucker jacketsStrong. Usually worth well over thrift prices.
1970s flares and bell bottoms (646, 684)Good. The exception among orange tab styles.
Made in USA, lowercase e (1970s to 2003)Solid. Usually tens of dollars, well above modern pairs.
Orange tab (517, other fashion fits)Modest, apart from flares.
Modern 501sLow. Rarely worth reselling unless the price is very low.

Prices move with size, wash and condition. Wearable waist sizes, honest fading and no repairs sell best. For a number on the pair in your hands, check recent sold listings or scan it with Fossick.

Reissues, reproductions and fakes

  • Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC). Official reissues with Big E tabs, selvedge and old construction. Check for a modern care tag and countries like Japan or Turkey. LVC pairs sewn at the Valencia Street plant in San Francisco are often sold as true vintage.
  • Japanese reproduction brands such as Sugar Cane, Warehouse and Full Count are excellent jeans, but they are not vintage Levi's.
  • Selvedge alone does not prove age. Levi's has brought selvedge back on modern lines.
  • Counterfeits show misspelled tabs, a tab in the wrong place, and rivets not stamped L.S.&CO. S.F.

Questions people ask

What does Big E mean on Levi's?

A red tab printed LEVI'S in all capital letters. Levi's used it before 1971, so a Big E tab points to an older pair, unless it is an LVC reissue.

Are all Made in USA Levi's valuable?

Not hugely, but they usually sell for more than modern pairs. The real money is in Big E and redline selvedge pairs.

What is a redline?

The red striped selvedge edge on the inside of the outseam, used on 501s until about 1983. Turn up a cuff to see it.

Can a Big E pair be new?

Yes. Levi's Vintage Clothing reissues use Big E tabs. Check the care tag and the country of manufacture.

How do I date Levi's from the care tag?

No tag points to before 1971, a plain white tag with red stitching to about 1971 to 1986, a red batwing logo to 1986 or later, and a four digit date code to 1993 or later.
